Our Approach

Christian values expressed meaningfully with integrity, love, sensitivity and  compassion.

  • We believe that Christian spirituality is expressed through compassion for humanity. The YMCA founder George Williams,  was a dedicated Christian who responded to the social ills of his day. In 1844 he started the first YMCA in central London, housing young migrant workers and alcoholics who were had formerly been rough sleeping. Today we remain committed to expressing our faith by loving our neighbour, loving God and responding to the changing needs around us.

Love, acceptance and impartiality towards all people.

  • Arising from our spirituality is a deep conviction that all humankind is created equal regardless of colour, race, nationality, gender, sexuality, ability or disability, age, belief or faith. All people are valuable and have the right to be included and contribute in society. To achieve this we take an active approach to tackling discrimination, protecting human dignity and promoting human rights.

A commitment to diversifying the way we serve the people of Liverpool.

  •  Liverpool YMCA has served Liverpool in housing, supporting and resettling former homeless individuals. We have opened gyms, youth centres, back-packers hostels all of which were high quality facilities. Throughout the war years and depressions, we served the armed forces and the victims of bomb damage. Today Liverpool YMCA runs several activities and is keen to develop more as need arises in the areas of housing, support, sports, arts and education.

A vital role in developing and maintaining relationships.

  • Facilities and programs are important but only in that they are a means to develop healthy productive relationships that can transform people’s lives. On every level Liverpool YMCA are committed to making things happen through networking, partnerships and co-operative working with likeminded organisations through committed and skilled staff.

Commitment to being a supportive learning organisation.

  • The development of Liverpool YMCA is directly dependent on the openness to change and innovation, education and a life long learning processes or its members, staff and trustees. There are always new ideas, knowledge and innovations that push the boundaries of excellence and transform people’s lives. As a learning organisation, in every dimension, we appraise our performance and seek improvements

An advocate of the disadvantaged and socially excluded.

  • We are passionate about tackling stereotypical views of disadvantaged people and voicing the views of those who are rarely heard. We achieve this on a daily basis in our routine work, sensitively challenging misconceptions and presenting listeners with different perspectives. Two key areas are those with substance misuse issues, street homeless and young people.
