Work With Offenders
A description of the work Liverpool YMCA carries out in conjunction with the prisons.
Over the last 2 years Liverpool YMCA has successfully continued establishing links with prisons throughout the country, and has been proactive in helping to integrate offenders back into society.
After an initial referral is made, two members of the support team will visit an individual prisoner and conduct an interview prior to their release. If it is not possible for staff to visit a prison, video links or telephone interviews can be arranged. If an application is successful, the support team will liaise with prison officers/resettlement officers in a bid to make the transition from the prison gate to the YMCA as stress free as possible; we understand that the move for some can be a difficult process, especially after long sentences have been served. It is not unusual for resettlement workers to accompany an individual to the YMCA.
One of the YMCA’s aims is to work with ex offenders, to encourage positive life choices to avoid re offending. Staff will liaise, when necessary, with probation officers for the benefit of an individual.
To date Liverpool YMCA has positively established working links with HMP Liverpool, HMP Risley, HMP Hindley, and HMP Altcourse.
